October movie rentals under gory spell

1408: TWO-DISC COLLECTOR’S EDITION

Weinstein/Genius

Available on DVD

This low-budget genre pic featuring John Cusack as a cynical “occult travel” writer and Samuel L. Jackson as the motel operator who warns him “don’t go in there” grossed an impressive $72 million domestically. Collector’s-edition purchasers get deleted scenes and some featurettes, but are notably left out of several exclusive goodies that are only available to those who rent the title at Blockbuster.

28 WEEKS LATER

Fox

Available on DVD and Blu-ray

Helmer Juan Carlos Fresnadillo found the edgy, quick-cutting style established by Danny Boyle in “28 Days Later” communicable enough to pick up himself. In this effective sequel, the U.S. Army manages to quarantine the “non-infected” on the British Isles — until Robert Carlyle comes down with the Rage Virus and triggers an insurgency.

HELLRAISER: 20TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION

Anchor Bay/Starz

Available on DVD

Having just announced that he’ll produce a remake, mastermind Clive Barker has issued a loaded commemorative of his seminal torture pic, which features a tricked-out Rubik’s Cube that — once solved — summons leather-clad punker demons equipped with chains and flying fish hooks.

HOSTEL: DIRECTOR’S CUT

Sony

Available on DVD and Blu-ray

For those with impenetrable psychological barriers, helmer Eli Roth has restored an original ending deemed “too shocking” for theatrical auds — that’s quite a claim, since the pic’s multiplex patrons had to witness graphic torture and dislodged eyeballs. Sony also released “Hostel Part II” on Oct. 23.

THE REAPING

Warner

Available on DVD, Blu-ray and HD-DVD

Haven, La., is no place for a two-time Oscar winner … but there Hilary Swank is, playing a myth-busting scientist who stumbles across the 10 biblical plagues only to find she has a hard time disproving their validity. Bonus features include the featurette “Science of the 10 Plagues.”
