Television org teams with MySpace

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences will triple the number of kudos it gives for broadband and mobile content this year and is teaming with MySpace to encourage amateur Web producers to submit.

Last year, in what Acad prexy Peter Price described as a “pilot,” org gave out one broadband Emmy each for entertainment, sports, news & information and public & community service.

Because the kudos weren’t heavily promoted, most of the entries came from networks and big media companies already used to dealing with NATAS. Winners included AOL, ESPN and WashingtonPost.com.

This year, however, the kudofest is looking to draw entries from the broad array of people creating high-quality video content for the Web. To handle an expected increase in entries, the entertainment category will be split into drama, comedy, children’s programming and variety. Also, there will be four separate news broadband Emmys and three for sports, along with one for public service.

“Since we’re announcing it more broadly this year, we know we’ll get a lot more entries from aspiring professionals, as well as traditional professionals who are increasingly moving into broadband,” Price said.

NATAS is creating a profile page on MySpace starting this week that will help users of the huge social networking site to enter videos for consideration and also will feature submissions to be viewed by the MySpace community.
