Foreign animation dominates market
It’s no secret the Chinese government wants to rein in the influence of Western culture. But who knew the battle between East and West would come down to a toon tussle?
While B.O. figures show domestic films out-earning imports for the fourth year in a row, a new report from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences singles out the domestic cartoon industry in particular as needing improvement.
Last September, a new directive banned foreign cartoons from primetime TV, but according to the report, foreign cartoons continue to dominate the market, with merchandising from imported animation accounting for 80% of the market.
It remains to be seen what China’s toon biz will conjure to counter the likes of Bugs Bunny and Yogi Bear.
