Disney to release game to accompany pic

“The Magic Gourd,” Disney’s first locally made Chinese film, has topped RMB16 million ($2 million) at the mainland B.O. in its second week of release.

The Mouse House is releasing a Chinese game to accompany the pic.

Released on June 29, movie held to a steady track. “The second weekend drop was only 16%,” said Jo Yan, senior VP of sales, co-productions and acquisitions for Walt Disney Studios Mo-tion Pictures Asia Pacific. “More importantly, on its second Tuesday, the half-price ticket day all across Chinese cinemas, our drop was less than 1% from its first Tuesday. All these suggest a good buzz on the street about the movie,” Jo added.

Moralistic kids fantasy was made as a co-production of Disney, Hong Kong’s Centro Digital and China Film Group.

Participating in the ChinaJoy Expo in Shanghai, the Walt Disney Internet Group said that it will launch 15 mobile Java-based games this year.

Leading the list are two made-for-China titles, “The Magic Gourd” and “Mickey’s Year of the Mouse,” as well as Chinese versions of global titles including “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End.”
