Japanese fare get fair play in Osaka

TOKYO — Animix 2008 in Osaka, a trade fair for Japanese toons and comics, will debut next November at the Intex Osaka exhibition center in Japan’s second-largest city.

There is already a major trade fair devoted to Japanese anime — the Tokyo Intl. Anime Fair — whose sixth edition was held in March, as well as Tokyo-based trade fairs for games, toys and other products of the contents biz.

The Osaka event will take a broader approach, including toon production houses, comics’ publishers, toy makers, clothing manufacturers and food product makers.

Businesses and government orgs in the Kansai region, which includes Osaka, Kobe and Kyoto, have been promoting local content industries in the face of Tokyo’s overwhelming dominance, as evidenced by the Asia Contents Market in Kansai in October and the opening of the Intl. Manga Museum in Kyoto a year ago. The new trade fair is the latest move in this campaign.
