First short list announced for Oscars

The Scientific and Technical Awards Committed of Academy of Motion Pictures Art & Sciences has released its shortlist of 15 sci-tech achievements being considered for Oscar consideration.

Companies with similar devices or claims of prior art must submit their achievements for review by Sept. 20.

The committee will meet in December to vote on recommendations to the Acad’s board of governors, which will make the final awards decisions.

The 15 achievements being considered are:

  • Prosthetic transfer (Tinsley Transfers)
  • Stunt fire safety gel (Fire for Hire)
  • Pressure sensor actuator (Precision Stunt Specialists)
  • Tiny fogger (Look Solutions)
  • Schneider 35mm image quality projection test film (Schneider Optics)
  • Kodak vision2 color negative films (Eastman Kodak)
  • Diagnosis and remediation of high-speed emulsion stress syndrome (Composite Components Co.)
  • Joker-bug, compact Versatile HMI Lighting Fixtures (K 5600 Inc.)
  • Realflow (Next Limit Technologies)
  • Industrial Light & Magic water system (ILM)
  • FSIM-fluid simulation pipeline (Digital Domain)
  • Sandstorm software system (Sony Pictures Imageworks)
  • Houdini’s unified dynamics simulation environments (Side Effects Software)
  • Technicolor digital printer lights (Technicolor)
  • Skater dolly products family (P+S Technik)

    The Scientific and Technical Achievement Awards will be presented Saturday, Feb. 9 at the BevWilshire.

    The 80th Academy Awards will take place Feb. 24 .
