Summit, Universal make distrib pact

First titles expected to ship in 2008

Three weeks after relaunching itself as a full-service studio, Summit Entertainment has signed a homevideo output deal with Universal Studios Home Entertainment.

The pact, unveiled Thursday by Summit chief operating officer Bob Hayward, calls for Universal to distribute Summit’s home entertainment product throughout the U.S., with Summit handling sales, marketing, distribution strategy and retailer relationships.

In addition to physical distribution, U will provide credit collection services and access to data.

“With Universal as our distribution partner, Summit has the right infrastructure in place to bring quality filmed entertainment product to the domestic marketplace,” Hayward said.

Summit expects the first home entertainment titles to ship to the domestic marketplace in 2008. Summit also said it plans to announce its home entertainment exec team soon.

Summit announced last week its slate of development projects, with a pair of pics — “Get Some” and “Step Up 2” — going into production this summer. Summit principals Robert Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger plan to release and distribute 10-12 pics a year, including eight that will be inhouse productions.
