Product will play both Blu-ray, HD DVD

Though it’s currently leading in sales, the Blu-ray high-definition DVD format lost one of its major backers Friday, as Samsung announced it will produce a dual-format player in time for the holidays.

Korean electronics company also said it is “flexible to market a stand-alone HD DVD player whenever consumers demand it.”

Samsung hinted last year it would make a dual-format player, but this is the first time it has officially announced plans to do so.

LG, formerly a Blu-ray supporter, announced at the Consumer Electronics Show in January it will launch a player that works with both formats this summer. However, it will cost more than $1,000 and won’t support HD DVD’s interactive technology.

Blu-ray has recently taken the lead, thanks to more movies being available in that format and sales of Sony’s Playstation 3, the videogame system that supports the format.

However, HD DVD is hoping to do better later this year as low-cost players from China start hitting the market.
