Netflix subsid Red Envelope Entertainment has reeled in North American rights for “I’m Reed Fish” and tapped Screen Media to handle its theatrical release.
Based on scribe Reed Fish’s experiences growing up in a small town, “I’m Reed Fish” stars Alexis Bledel (“Gilmore Girls”), Jay Baruchel and Schuyler Fisk. It was directed by Zackary Adler.
Baruchel received the best actor kudos at this year’s U.S. Comedy Arts Festival for his work in the pic.
Pic will receive a limited bow June 1, and then expand nationally under Screen Media’s output deal with Universal Studios Home Entertainment.
Red Envelope acquires pics for Netflix’s online subscription service and other distribution channels. Netco began its theatrical push last year with pics such as Maggie Gyllenhaal starrer “Sherrybaby” and MPAA doc “This Film Is Not Yet Rated,” both distribbed theatrically by IFC.
Screen Media, another homevid concern, bowed its new theatrical arm at Sundance this year (Daily Variety, Jan. 17).
