LEADERSHIP: Entertainment in Video, the U.K.’s top local DVD distributor, has reigned over local competitors by putting out some of Hollywood’s biggest blockbusters across the Pond.
A deal with New Line allowed EiV to distribute the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy in the U.K., and the company has also been savvy picking up big titles from other studios, including “The Departed” and “Brokeback Mountain.”
Despite its high-profile release slate, the privately held distributor operates under the radar, without even a public website.
That hasn’t slowed its growth, however. U.K. media research firm Screen Digest estimates EiV has an 8.5% share of the local market, putting it ahead of nearest U.K. competitor 2Entertain, a joint partnership between BBC Video and the Woolworths Group.
Evenden has been with the company since the days of VHS, and he’s known to industryites as a shrewd exec who understands the disc market and how to deal with retailers like few others.
Earlier this year, EiV began issuing its first high-definition releases, choosing to exclusively back the Blu-ray format in a move that could help sway the disc wars in the largest DVD market outside the United States.
