Results show will air as an hour at 9 p.m.
Fox is making room for more “American Idol,” expanding the reality competish’s Wednesday results show to an hour, beginning next month.
The “Idol” results show will air as an hour at 9 p.m. starting April 11, and continuing April 18 and 25, as well as May 2.
That means “Til Death,” which has been airing in the 9:30 slot behind “Idol,” will now wrap early on April 11 at 8 p.m., with a special one-hour season finale. “Bones” returns in its usual 8 p.m. slot the following week.
Fox said the expansion comes at the request of “Idol” producers, who have been looking to cram more content into the results shows.
Exec producer Nigel Lythgoe last week told Daily Variety that he found it difficult to cram the “Idol” numbers, guest performances and actual results into the show’s 22-minute window.
“I love the results show because that’s when we really get to produce,” he said. “There’s so much content there, it’s not just about who’s going home. You’re frequently promising a star like Diana Ross that you’ll give her time to perform and talk about her tour and album.”
Expanded “Idols” aren’t expected to have an impact on the season-to-date standings, as Fox already moved into the top 18-49 spot (and won’t likely relinquish it). That’s the earliest Fox has popped into No. 1; last year, the 18-49 title wasn’t determined until the final night of the season.
