With the blizzard of coverage of the presidential race, including who will win the industry’s backing, it makes sense to see what Hollywood’s chief lobbyist predicts.
Perhaps offering a dose of sanity to the mix, the MPAA’s Dan Glickman says, “It’s way too early to make any predictions about who Hollywood will endorse. There’s activity in Southern California right now, but that’s natural because candidates have to raise so much money, and obviously Southern California is a source of a great quantity of money.”
A fund-raiser is far from a formal endorsement, Glickman notes. “You’ll see a lot of people giving to a lot of different candidates at this stage. But they’ll keep their options open.”
Bill Clinton’s continuing popularity among showbiz types will definitely be a boon to Hillary, the former congressman and Clinton cabinet member says. “But there’s a lot of excitement for Obama, too. Nobody’s got a lock on anything yet.”
Probably by summertime, clear lines of support will take shape, he says. Until then, look for many candidates auditioning for showbiz money.
Says Glickman, “Money is the name of the game.”
