Clinton Beats Obama in Hollywood Fund-raising

Hillary Clinton once again edged out Barack Obama in entertainment industry fund-raising in the second quarter, with both candidates far ahead of their rivals in Hollywood money.

According to figures compiled this week by the Center for Responsive Politics, donors gave Clinton $753,000 in the second quarter to Obama’s $617,388. Overall in 2008, Clinton has collected $1,563,948 and Obama has collected $1,302,072.

Rudy Giuliani beat John McCain in contributions in the second quarter, even though he still trails McCain in overall raised in entertainment this year.

Bill Richardson was the only candidate to show a significant rise in contributions in the second quarter: $98,650, for a total of $165,150. He benefited from fund-raisers held by Sherry Lansing and William Friedkin and another by Alan and Cindy Horn. John Edwards held fewer fund-raisers in Hollywood in the second quarter, and the figures show it: He raised $85,267 compared to $293,075 in the first quarter.

Among media companies, Time Warner executives and employees were the leading sources of contributions to both Clinton and Obama. Clinton has taken in $103,220 from the company so far this year, and Obama has collected $107,751, according to the CRP data. Clinton has collected $93,200 from Viacom sources and $78,650 from News Corp. Obama has taken in 80,399 from Viacom employees.

The figures are based on an analysis of individual contributions. More data is still being compiled by the group, but they are not expected to change the rankings. The analysis is of individual contributions of more than $200.

The numbers also may look surprisingly low. That’s because contributors such as lawyers are classified in a separate category, even if they do the bulk of their work in the entertainment industry. And while it may seem that many fund-raisers are full of industry types, in truth they are drawing donors from many different professions.
