Rupe doubts Clinton endorsement

Murdoch will still contribute to campaign

Rupert Murdoch has told journalists that he doubted that he would endorse Hillary Clinton for president. But that didn’t mean he wouldn’t donate to her campaign.

Recently filed campaign finance reports show that in June her campaign collected $2,300 from Murdoch for her presidential bid; his son, James, contributed a total of $3,450.

A change of heart?

Clinton supporters in Los Angeles say that they haven’t heard of any Murdoch endorsement. But some of his lieutenants have been raising money for Clinton. News Corp. exec VP Gary Ginsberg co-hosted a fund-raiser for her, as did News Corp. chief operating officer Peter Chernin, along with director Steven Spielberg and Haim Saban.

While the conservative Murdoch did host a fund-raising event last summer for Clinton’s Senate re-election bid, he’s been much more cautious about her presidential prospects.

At a Business Week media conference in February, Murdoch offered praise for Michael Bloomberg and Newt Gingrich. Of Clinton, he variously called her “very considerable and very intelligent” and “calculating…she leaves her options open.”

A spokesman for News Corp. said of Murdoch’s contribution, “I wouldn’t read too much into it.”
