Japanese court fines pirate trio

Law usually only applies to Yakuza

A Japanese court last week fined three pic pirates a total of $376,500 for violations of the Organized Crime Punishment Law — the first fines under that law for intellectual property theft.

The law is usually applied only to Japan’s organized gangs, the Yakuza.

The defendants earned an estimated $1 million-$1.4 million distribbing pirated copies of Hollywood pics via mobile phone sites. They also received suspended prison sentences of two to three years.
