The American Federation of Television and Radio Artists has promoted Joan Halpern Weise to the post of assistant national exec director of entertainment programming.
AFTRA’s announcement comes with the performers’ union prepping for negotiations on its network code contract, which covers non-primetime, generates $400 million in annual member earnings and expires Jan. 31. AFTRA also jointly negotiates with SAG on the film-TV contract, which covers primetime and expires June 30.
Weise has been AFTRA’s key exec in such contract talks since 2000, when she was named national director for entertainment programming. She’s responsible for coordinating negotiating and contract administration work for AFTRA for prime time and non-prime time television programming, cable TV programming, and new media.
“This much-deserved promotion recognizes the vital role that Joan plays in maintaining and improving standards for working performers in entertainment programming, whether network and cable TV, the Internet, or new media platforms,” said AFTRA national exec director Kim Roberts Hedgpeth.
Weise began working for the AFTRA Los Angeles Local in 1981 as a TV rep. She becomes AFTRA’s third assistant national exec director along Mathis L. Dunn Jr. for commercials, non-broadcast and interactive, and Randall Himes for sound recordings.
