Analysis: Operating largely under the radar (company’s highest grosser to date is 2004 foreign-language Oscar winner “Nowhere in Africa”), long-standing Gotham-based boutique distributor accomplishes a lot with a little, handling only a few theatrical releases every year.
Gerstman and Russo managed to turn “Into Great Silence,” a nearly three-hour foreign doc about a monastery in the Alps, into one of 2007’s biggest nonfiction successes. However, even though critically heralded docu “Manufactured Landscapes” performed well in New York, it has not reproduced sizable audiences elsewhere. After Cannes 2007, company reeled in Camera d’Or winner “Jellyfish,” one of several Israeli films popular at the fest.
