B.O.: $11 million
Top pic: “Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters,” $5.5 million
Exec suite: Trevor Short, CEO; Dean Wilson, COO; Andy Gruenberg, exec VP, distribution
Analysis: First Look Studios is aiming at releasing a wide variety of projects but the company hasn’t disclosed much about its upcoming slate since Avi Lerner’s Nu Image/Millennium Films bought control of First Look this spring.
Besides “Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters,” First Look’s releases over the past 12 months included “Paris, je t’aime” and “A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints” — holdovers from the former regime under ex-First Look Pictures prexy Ruth Vitale, who stayed on to usher “Aqua Teen” into theaters in April. CEO Trevor Short says their strategy of opening “Paris” on four screens and platforming to more than 300 worked well. Pic, mostly in French, ended up grossing some $5 million.
Upcoming pics are quirky comedies that could play wider: “King of California,” toplining Michael Douglas, and “The Amateurs,” with Jeff Bridges and Ted Danson.
