Studio issues emphatic denial
Is Richard Saperstein the president of production of Dimension Films… or isn’t he?
When Daily Variety formally asked the company last week if Saperstein had been dismissed by the Weinstein Co.’s co-chairman Bob Weinstein, the studio issued an emphatic denial.
The denial seemed plausible, if only because the timing of rumored Dimension strife comes as the genre company just scared up solid business with its ghost story “1408” and has two potential hits coming in “Rob Zombie’s Halloween” and the Frank Darabont-directed adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Mist.”
Days later, rumors continued to race around the industry that Saperstein had indeed been fired but that TWC was trying to figure out a way to avoid paying out a lengthy contract. Daily Variety asked the question once again Friday night, and the studio was sticking to its story. According to the company, there was no firing, Saperstein is president, and he continues to run the day-to-day business of the production company. The rumors are false, the company maintained.
