Olivia de Havilland happily told me how busy she was this week — almost like being in a movie, readying gowns, shoes, makeup, hair for gala appearances. Thursday is the special tribute to her at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences from which she received two Oscars and three nominations.
On Sunday (June 18), she will be toasted with a “conversation” prior to a screening of “The Heiress” (1949) for which she received one of her Oscars. (The other for “To Each His Own” plus three other nominations). Winging in to join Olivia at the celebration are Errol Flynn’s two daughters and his widow Patrice Wymore. De Havilland, who costarred with Flynn in WB’s many memorable movies, laughingly says, “I am now a member of the Flynn family.” She will celebrate her 90th birthday July 1, here in Southern Calif. with her daughter Giselle Galante.
Olivia has often been a visitor here from her home in Paris. In her unmistakable smiling voice, she admitted, “I am called to do something almost every year,” she laughed. On a visit two years ago, she toured her alma mater the Warner Brother lot. But, when I asked if she had any work offers, she laughed,” Not that I know of.”
