From Mel Gibson to Sacha Baron Cohen

There was something for everyone at the AMC Century City 8:20 screening of Sacha Baron Cohen’s “Borat” Monday night.

We got two of the remaining seats — in the fourth row. But I wasn’t worried because I (thought I) knew there would be no screen-screaming special sound and video effects in Cohen’s movie. But I didn’t take into account the blasting and blaring scenes of the previews for movies to come.

Among them was the “Academy Award Winning Mel Gibson’s ‘Apocalypto.'” Borat’s movie was an immediate laugh-getter from its start — with the startlingly tasteless “Running of the Jews” sequence bringing down the house.

In between Mel’s preview and Sacha’s movie was another trailer — this one for Jerry Seinfeld’s upcoming (Nov. 2, 2007!) “Bee Movie.” He, Chris Rock and several stuntmen donned appropriate bug costumes for the trailer — although they are only voiced in the movie. Eddie Izzard “directs” them.

Seinfeld is now editing a second long-distance trailer — in this one Steven Spielberg appears as himself, directing the bee-costumed Seinfeld. The idea for the film was hatched by both Seinfeld and Spielberg four years ago during a charity event in Easthampton.

The other “bee” voices include: Matthew Broderick, Renee Zellweger, John Goodman, Oprah Winfrey, Barry Levinson, Rip Torn and Larry King. In between filming “Bee,” Jerry’s lined up these dates, Cedar Rapids, Milwaukee, Kalamazoo, Pittsburgh, Las Vegas, etc.
