Monday night at the Geffen Playhouse, subscribers were treated to a surprise finale — actually two surprises — to the evening’s congratulatory cocktailer.
After remarks by producing director Gil Cates and Artistic Director Randy Arney, Hershey Felder at the concert grand, performed his “Gershwin Alone” tribute. And As a finale, he asked the audience to join singing classic Gershwin evergreens.
From the balcony, one voice — Kate Palmer’s — rang so beautifully true, Felder led her solo in “Summertime” to the delight of the audience which loudly applauded her (and Felder, natch).
When leaving the theater Palmer was also congratted by the departing audience, one of whom, Jackie Bogin, asked Palmer where she can again be heard singing. “I need a job!” Palmer answered. She said the same to me when I called her. She sings solo or with the Merrywoode Singers.
