The new Hollywood Blvd. welcomed an addition on Jan.11, 2006 — but it actually dates back to 1903. The “Jones House” at 6541 Hollywood Blvd. (the corner of Hudson) is now “Memphis,” the latest eatery brainchild of Michael Sutton–who is also partnered in The Lodge and his private club, XENII. Opening night among those on hand to split a well-wishbone were Hillary Swank, recently split from Chad Lowe, Jamie Foxx, Chris Rock, Kanye West, Lebron James, and Cuttino Mobley who is also an investor.
Chef Terry Fortia had been at New Orleans’ Southern Yacht Club when Katrina hit. Sutton spotted him and his family on TV as they were leaving the ravaged New Orleans and he contacted them, set them up in an L.A. home — and the start of Memphis. The “Jones house” walls are a treasure-trove of movie memorabilia as the house had become a school whose students included children of Chaplin, Fairbanks and other Hollywood hierarchy. I lived up the hill from the boulevard on Whitley Terrace, the home of many movie stars from the ’30s–on.
