Satellite entertainment channel Wowow will supply its programming to the Sky PerfecTV platform, the two companies announced.
Broadcasts of Wowow programs will start Dec. 1 on one Sky PerfecTV channel, with subs paying ¥3,150 ($26.69) to join Wowow and a monthly fee of $17.80.
“Through our partnership, we plan to grow the market for pay TV in Japan,” Wowow prexy Toshio Hirose told reporters at a news conference announcing the partnership.
The two broadcasters have no immediate plans to produce shows together, but have not ruled out the possibility, Hirose and Sky Perfect Communications prexy Masao Nito said.
Launched in 1991, Wowow is celebrating its 15th anni. It offers subs a wide-ranging lineup of entertainment programming, including sports, music, toons and pics, both acquired and Wowow-produced. At the end of September it had 2.38 million subs. With its addition to the Sky PerfecTV lineup, it hopes to boost this total by 50,000 by March.
Now in its 10th year of operation, Sky PerfecTV is Japan’s biggest channel platform service, beaming 190 TV and 101 radio channels via two communications satellites. By the end of September it was servicing a total of 4.17 subs, of which 3.72 million were signed up for the Sky PerfecTV channel service.
