Here! debuts filmmaker's 'Corrupt' series Feb. 3
While broadcast execs are sweating what Congress will do next about indecency, cable’s Here! Network is launching a movie series all but guaranteed to light up the FCC switchboard.
And just to be sure, the gay-oriented net hired possibly the only frontman who delights in shocking and offending more than Howard Stern.
“John Waters Presents Movies That Will Corrupt You,” debuting Feb. 3, will feature 13 pics personally selected by the helmer of cult hits like “Pink Flamingos” and “Female Trouble.”
John Waters, aka the Pope of Trash, says he looked for films “that will corrupt an audience that thinks they have seen everything.”
Titles include “Fuego,” an Argentine sexploitation romp; “Clean, Shaven,” about prejudice against abnormal looks and behavior; “The Fluffer,” about the gay porn industry; and “Sissy Boy Slap Party,” which almost defies description.
“Every one of these movies could have the tagline, ‘How do you get that on television?’ ” says Waters.
Gay themes and issues dominate some pics, but are absent in others. “My job is to lure in straight people, too. For crossover,” he adds with a smile, “not conversion.”
