Host ankles gameshow to devote time to web

SYDNEY — Nine Network topper and TV celebrity Eddie McGuire hosted his last edition of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire” in Oz Monday.

McGuire, who’s now devoting all his time to running the web, pulled an aud of 1.3 million, which failed to best Seven Network’s “Desperate Housewives” with 1.8 million.

But “Housewives” was off 138,000 and the “Millionaire” audience was its biggest of the year.

No replacement has yet been found for McGuire on “Millionaire.” Show will take a few weeks’ break over the Easter nonratings period, with a new host expected to be announced soon.

“Millionaire” has been running on Nine for seven years, and McGuire took on Nine’s top job in February.
