Hoping to carry momentum from its successful new Sunday night NFL franchise, NBC will be making a big promotional push for its National Hockey League package, with the first game to be aired on Jan. 13. Peacock will be marketing the NFL with promos during football games, as well as in hockey arenas and advertising in retail stores.
The core of the marketing blitz will be to focus on young stars, such as Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Each weekend the Peacock will have a game of the week, the first being the Penguins versus the Philadelphia Flyers.
NBC is entering the second season of its NHL deal in which it paid the league no rights fees up front. Last season, the network’s NHL coverage averaged a 1.4 rating overall for the regular season and playoffs.
