Locals going loco for ‘Survivor’

World Brief

JOHANNESBURG — Paycaster M-Net is bracing itself for a flood of entries from South Africans for the chance to compete in the first local “Survivor,” produced by Endemol SA.

“Survivor South Africa: Panama” starts shooting on the Pearl Islands in the Gulf of Panama on June 5 using the infrastructure from the Swedish “Survivor.” It  will be broadcast weekly in primetime from Aug. 27 during the channel’s daily two-hour open time when non-subscribers can tune in. The last surviving contestant will win R 1million ($165,000) during a live finale Nov. 26.

Carl Fischer, M-Net’s head of local productions, says the skein will follow the traditional “Survivor” format, but the challenges and rewards will have a uniquely South African flavor.
