Khan to host Indian ‘Millionaire’

Star TV reviving most popular show in country's history

NEW DELHI — News Corp.’s Star Entertainment TV channel is reviving the most popular show in India’s history, with Bollywood actor Shahrukh Khan as its new host.

“Kaun banega crorepati,” based on “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire,” was scrapped in January after its celebrity host, Amitabh Bachchan, fell ill.

The channel will start production of the program in December and expects it to go on air by the end of January, according to Samir Nair, CEO of Star Entertainment India, as quoted by the Press Trust of India news agency.

Khan, one of Bollywood’s biggest heartthrobs and highest-paid actors, said he was pleasantly surprised when Star offered him the show.

“It is a huge act to follow, that of Bachchan,” he said in a statement.

Bachchan spent nearly three weeks in a hospital in Mumbai in December after having surgery for an intestinal ailment. He resumed work in Bollywood movies but didn’t return to the TV program.
