‘Housewives, ‘ ‘Home’ lift ABC

Morning Ratings Flash -- Rick Kissell

ABC is expected to edge out NBC for the Sunday victory among young adults based on preliminary Nielsens that show winning results from the Alphabet’s “Desperate Housewives” and “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” and a sturdy week-two showing by the net’s new “Brothers & Sisters.”

“Desperate Housewives” (projected 8.6 rating/20 share in adults 18-49, 21.5 million viewers overall) was down 10% from its week-earlier season premiere but easily led the 9 o’clock hour and will finish the week as the No. 2 program among young adults — behind the net’s own “Grey’s Anatomy.” Following “Housewives,” ABC’s family drama “Brothers & Sisters” (projected 5.3/14 in 18-49, 13.3 million viewers overall) was also down about 10% week to week, retaining roughly the same percentage of its lead-in as premiere week.

ABC was solid at 7 with the season preem of “America’s Funniest Home Videos” (2.7/8 in 18-49, 9.2 million viewers overall) and moved up nicely at 8 with “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” (5.7/15 in 18-49, 14.7 million viewers overall).

NBC is projected to come in with roughly a 6.6/16 in adults 18-49 and 16.5 million viewers overall for its NFL contest between the Chicago Bears and Seattle Seahawks. When nationals come in, the net could challenge ABC for the nightly lead in 18-49 and will win as usual in key male demos.

CBS benefited from roughly a 30-minute NFL overrun, which pushed back the start times for its regular programs in much of the country. “Amazing Race” (roughly 3.8/10 in 18-49, 12.2 million viewers overall) was up a bit week to week, while “Cold Case” (roughly 4/10 in 18-49, 14 million viewers overall) was flat.

Fox went with mostly repeats of its comedies, led by “The Simpsons” at 8 (3.6/10 in 18-49, 7.6 million viewers overall) and “Family Guy” at 9 (3.6/8 in 18-49, 7.1 million viewers overall).

Auds didn’t show up in the early 7 o’clock half-hour, meanwhile, for CW’s season premiere of former UPN comedy “Everybody Hates Chris” (0.9/3 in 18-49, 2.4 million viewers overall). Net settled for similar results the rest of the night, from “All of Us” (0.9/3 in 18-49, 2.3 million viewers overall), “Girlfriends” (1.2/3 in 18-49, 2.6 million viewers overall) and the premiere of “The Game” (1.2/3 in 18-49, 2.6 million viewers overall).

Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: ABC, 5.6/14; NBC, 5.3/14 (7:30 to 11 p.m.); CBS, 4.3/11; Fox, 3/8; CW, 1.1/3.

In total viewers: ABC, 14.7 million; CBS, 14.7 million; 13.4 million; Fox, 6.4 million; CW, 2.5 million.
