‘Greys’ powers ABC

Morning Ratings Flash - Rick Kissell

The combo of “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Desperate Housewives” delivered another ratings victory in key demos for ABC on Sunday, a night that also included the series finales of NBC’s “West Wing” and Fox’s “Malcolm in the Middle.”

According to preliminary nationals from Nielsen, ABC rolled from 9 to 11 with “Desperate Housewives” (8.1 rating/18 share in 18-49, 20.8 million viewers overall) and “Grey’s Anatomy” (9.6/22 in 18-49, 22.3 million viewers overall), while 8 o’clock skein “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” ran second in its timeslot (4.2/11 in 18-49, 11.0 million viewers overall). Although “Housewives” was on the low end, “Grey’s” remained steady and will finish as the week’s No. 1 scripted program in 18-49.

The conclusion of “Survivor: Exile Island” on CBS averaged a 6.1/15 in 18-49 and 16.9 million viewers overall, winning the 8 o’clock hour and placing second to “Housewives” at 9 — although this was easily the vet skein’s lowest-rated finale to date. The reunion show at 10 netted a second-place 4.9/11 in 18-49 and 12.3 million viewers overall.

The finale of NBC’s “West Wing” (2.8/7 in 18-49, 9.9 million viewers overall) rose about 20% from the previous week but remained fourth for its 8 o’clock hour in 18-49 and third in total viewers. Net then placed third in demos from 9 to 11 with two firstrun hours of “Law & Order: Criminal Intent” (3.5/8 in 18-49, 11.8 million viewers overall).

At Fox, the series finale of “Malcolm in the Middle” at 8:30 averaged a 3.4/9 in 18-49 and 7.5 million viewers overall, as the comedy boosted its numbers by returning to the post-“Simpson” timeslot it had long held. Net’s top scores for the night came from “The Simpsons” (3.9/11 in 18-49, 8.3 million viewers overall) and “Family Guy” (3.8/9 in 18-49, 8.0 million viewers overall).

Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: ABC, 6.1/16; CBS, 4.9/13; NBC, 2.9/7; Fox, 3.1/8; WB, 1.0/3.

In total viewers: ABC, 15.5 million; CBS, 14.5 million; NBC, 9.9 million; Fox, 6.5 million; WB, 2.4 million.
