BERLIN — Teutonic TV star Thomas Gottschalk is set to give Herbert Kloiber’s weblet Tele 5 a helping hand.
The host of pubcaster ZDF’s “Wetten, dass…?” (Wanna Bet?), one of the most popular variety/gameshows on German TV, has inked a wide-ranging deal with Tele 5 as promoter, adviser and on-air host.
Gottschalk, who regularly draws up to a 40% market share, or more than 13 million viewers, with “Wanna Bet?,” will host film news skeins and special movie nights and promote the channel via radio and TV ads. The star will also remain a fixture at ZDF, where he has a deal through 2010.
As part of his pact with Tele 5, Gottschalk is to receive profit participation as soon as the money-losing channel becomes profitable.
Last year Kloiber relaunched Tele 5 as a film and series outlet, going up against the NBC Universal’s free-TV channel Das Vierte, which similarly showcases classic movies and U.S. series. While the revamp has attracted more viewers, Tele 5’s market share remains below 1%.
