Dominant victories by “Survivor” and “CSI” lifted CBS to an easy primetime ratings victory among young adults on Thursday, while it was a quiet finish to ABC’s “American Inventor.”

According to preliminary nationals from Nielsen, CBS won five of the night’s six hours in the key adults 18-49 demo, getting off to a good start with “Survivor: Exile Island” (5.7 rating/17 share in adults 18-49, 17.2 million viewers overall) and then opening up a bigger lead at 9 with part one of the two-part “CSI” season finale (8.2/21 in 18-49, 26.6 million viewers overall). “Without a Trace” (5.8/15 in 18-49, 19.0 million viewers overall) closed out the night on top as well.

NBC saw some minor gains by super-sizing its comedies, including the season finales of “My Name is Earl” (roughly 4.3/11 in 18-49, 9.3 million viewers overall) and “The Office” (3.9/10 in 18-49, 7.5 million viewers overall) and the penultimate seg of “Will & Grace” (3.5/10 in 18-49, 9.0 million viewers overall). At 10, “ER” (5.5/15 in 18-49, 13.1 million viewers overall) delivered its best perf in three May sweep outings, running second in most categories and first in adults 18-34 (4.9/15).

At ABC, the finale of once-promising unscripted skein “American Inventor” ran a distant fourth in the 9 o’clock hour (2.6/7 in 18-49, 7.0 million viewers overall), and “Primetime” was also behind the pack at 10 (2.8/7 in 18-49, 6.6 million viewers overall).

Fox was an improved No. 3 on the night with “That ’70s Show” (3.3/10 in 18-49, 6.8 million viewers overall) and a roughly 85-minute retrospective of the long-running laffer (3.8/10 in 18-49, 7.7 million viewers overall). Show’s series finale is skedded for next Thursday.

Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: CBS, 6.6/18; NBC, 4.4/12; Fox, 3.6/10; ABC, 2.3/6; WB, 1.6/4; UPN, 0.9/3.

In total viewers: CBS, 21.0 million; NBC, 10.1 million; Fox, 7.3 million; ABC, 6.2 million; WB, 3.7 million; UPN, 2.2 million.
