‘Dancing’ up, baseball down

Morning Ratings Flash - Rick Kissell

ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars” delivered its best numbers since its premiere on Tuesday opposite a low-rated, fourth-place start to baseball’s League Championship Series on Fox.

According to affiliate-based preliminary nationals from Nielsen, “Dancing With the Stars” was the night’s top program in both adults 18-49 (5.6 rating/15 share) and total viewers (20 million), up 8% week to week and its best deliveries since its Sept. 12 season opener. Ted Danson laffer “Help Me Help You” was up a tick behind “Dancing” at 9:30 (3.1/8 in 18-49, 10.3 million viewers overall), and “Boston Legal” was flat at 10 (2.9/8 in 18-49, 10.1 million viewers overall).

Demo and total-viewer figure estimates for Fox’s baseball game are murky due to the live nature of the event, but the Detroit Tigers’ 5-1 victory over the Oakland Athletics earned a 6.6 household rating/11 share in Nielsen’s metered-market overnights — down 26% from the 8.9/13 for the corresponding game of a year ago. That contest, between the Chicago White Sox and Los Angeles Angels, averaged a 3.6/10 in adults 18-49 and 11.5 million viewers overall in the national ratings.

At NBC, “Friday Night Lights” (2.4/7 in 18-49, 6.3 million viewers overall) was down 11% from its modest premiere of one week ago, and the net’s “Law & Order: Criminal Intent” (3.6/9 in 18-49, 11.3 million viewers overall) and “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” (4.6/12 in 18-49, 13.8 million viewers overall) were also down. “SVU” again led its hour, though.

CBS was paced by solid scores for “NCIS” (3.7/10 in 18-49, 14.3 million viewers overall) and “The Unit” (3.6/9 in 18-49, 11.3 million viewers overall), both of which fell week to week. And at 10, a special repeat of “CSI” (3.2/9 in 18-49, 10.0 million viewers overall) improved by nearly 15% over what “Smith” logged in its third and final Tuesday telecast (2.8/8 in 18-49, 8.4 million viewers overall).

The CW’s “Gilmore Girls” (2.0/6 in 18-49, 4.6 million viewers overall) and “Veronica Mars” (1.3/3 in 18-49, 3.0 million viewers overall) were in line with the previous week’s scores.

Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: ABC, 4.3/11; CBS, 3.6/11; NBC, 3.5/9; Fox, 2.6/7; CW, 1.7/4.

In total viewers: ABC, 15.1 million; CBS, 12.9 million; NBC, 10.5 million; Fox, 7.8 million; CW, 3.8 million.
