Cricket exclusive to net Ten

World Brief

India’s Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld Ten Sports’ exclusive right to broadcast the India-West Indies cricket series, beginning in the Caribbean on May 18.

Decision overrules the government, which last year made it mandatory for private channels to provide free live feeds of events of national importance — which by definition includes all cricket matches played by the national team — to state-owned pubcaster Doordarshan.

Ten Sports paid over $100 million for rights to all matches played in West Indies, Pakistan and Sri Lanka and has licensed nationwide rights for the forthcoming series to Sony Entertainment Television’s SET Discovery.

Confrontation is similar to a spat between Ten and Doordarshan over the India-Pakistan cricket series, played in January in Pakistan.
