Axel Springer to expand TV plans

Publishing giant has 27% stake in Hamburg 1

BERLIN — Publishing giant Axel Springer, which lost its bid for Haim Saban’s ProSiebenSat 1 broadcasting group earlier this year, is expanding its regional TV operations with a 27.4% share in local channel TV Berlin.

The state media regulator and federal cartel office must approve the deal.

Axel Springer already has a 27% stake in regional channel Hamburg 1.

Hamburg-based Almond Media owns majority stakes in both TV Berlin and Hamburg 1.

Meanwhile, ProSiebenSat 1 has extended a deal with Constantin Film for free TV rights to international and domestic inhouse productions and co-productions for two years.

Pact, announced Tuesday, includes box office hits such as “Perfume.”

An additional contract expands ProSiebenSat 1’s acquisitions with licensed international films, such as the upcoming “Asterix at the Olympic Games,” starring Gerard Depardieu and Alain Delon.

ProSiebenSat 1 has long-term contracts with nearly all the Hollywood majors. It recently inked a major output deal with Warners and acquired the complete series of James Bond films from MGM Intl.
