Entertainment unit buys into Synergy Communications

MUMBAI — Adlabs Films, the entertainment arm of the Reliance-Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group, will buy a controlling stake in television content provider Synergy Communications, subject to regulatory approvals.

Synergy Communications, a closely held company headed by promoter Siddhartha Basu, is producing Sony Entertainment Television’s “Jhalak dikhla ja,” a local adaptation of the BBC’s “Strictly Come Dancing.”

“While Adlabs is acquiring 51% controlling stake in Synergy Communications, operational control will remain with the original promoters of Synergy, who will continue to manage the day-to-day business affairs of the company and will also chart future expansion and growth plans in view of synergies arising out of this association,” said Manmohan Shetty, Adlabs’ chairman and managing director.

Synergy previously produced “Kaun banega crorepati,” a local version of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire,” for News Corp.’s Star Plus, as well as the Indian version of BBC’s “Mastermind” quiz show.
