ABC’s ‘Dancing’ up, ‘Lost’ down

ABC captured another Wednesday in key young-adult demos thanks to slot victories by “Dancing With the Stars” and “Lost.” While the hoofing contest hit a season high, however, the drama was at its low-water mark.

According to preliminary nationals from Nielsen, the results show edition of “Dancing With the Stars” dominated from 8 to 9, with a 4.9 rating/14 share in adults 18-49 and 19.2 million viewers overall. CBS was again a solid second with “Jericho” (3.1/8 in 18-49, 10.8 million viewers overall), but NBC’s new comedies “30 Rock” (2.3/7 in 18-49, 5.9 million viewers overall) and “Twenty Good Years” (2.1/6 in 18-49, 5.1 million viewers overall) both declined more than 15% from their premieres and as a combo will finish fifth in 18-49.

“Lost” (6.5/16 in 18-49, 16.1 million viewers overall) again easily led the 9 o’clock hour in key demos despite declines while CBS’  “Criminal Minds” was again on the rise (4.5/11 in 18-49, 16.1 million viewers overall) and was on par with the ABC drama in total viewers for a second straight week. NBC’s “Biggest Loser” was a distant third (3.1/8 in 18-49, 7.4 million viewers overall).

At 10, CBS remained in control with “CSI: NY” (5.0/13 in 18-49, 15.7 million viewers overall) while ABC’s “The Nine” (3.2/9 in 18-49, 8.6 million viewers overall) maintained its second-place score from the prior week even though its lead-in dipped. NBC newsmag “Dateline” placed third (2.6/7 in 18-49, 7.3 million viewers overall).               

Fox’s coverage of Game 6 of the National League Championship Series between the New York Mets and St. Louis Cardinals averaged a 3.2/8 in adults 18-49 and 10.4 million viewers overall on the net’s affils from 8 to 11, with its national average expected to rise by 5%-10%.

CW was again a force to be reckoned with in the opening hour, as “America’s Next Top Model” (2.5/7 in 18-49, 5.1 million viewers overall) ran second to “Dancing” among adults 18-34 (2.9/9).

Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: ABC, 4.9/13; CBS, 4.2/11; Fox, 3.2/8; NBC, 2.6/7; CW, 1.9/5.

In total viewers: ABC, 14.5 million; CBS, 14.2 million; Fox, 10.4 million; NBC, 6.7 million; CW, 4.0 million.
