Sony catches ‘Beauty’

TV unit nabs rights to Vietnamese movie

Sony Pictures Television Intl. has acquired Asian TV rights to Vietnamese movie “Long-Legged Beauty.”

Pic is a first for production house Galaxy Studio and is the debut feature of shorts helmer Vu Ngoc Dang, who won Vietnam’s National Youth Film Contest for short movie. Pic headed the Vietnamese B.O. and was a nominee for film at the Vietnamese Film Awards.

“Beauty” is a tale of teen rebellion about a girl who breaks from family traditions to pursue a modeling career. Pic includes real-life Vietnamese supermodels such as Anh Thu, Ngoc Nga, Duong Yen Ngoc, Xuan Lan and Thanh Hang.

Deal with Sony is understood to be the first time a Vietnamese picture has been distribbed by a Hollywood studio.

SPTI recently acquired rights to Japanese miniseries “Tokyo Friends,” Korean animation “MaskMan,” and “Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles” by “Curse of the Golden Flower” helmer Zhang Yimou.
