Topliners perform disappearing act at 'Prestige' preem

For a film about magic, perhaps it was appropriate that some of the cast disappeared after doing the press line.

At Tuesday’s El Capitan preem of “The Prestige,” the Mouse House’s story of obsessively competitive magicians, stars Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale had to leave before the screening. Word on the street was the pair had to catch a flight to Gotham for more press appearances.

The loss of the stars took a bit away from the after-party, but it still went well.

Master magician Ricky Jay, who both co-stars and acted as technical consultant, was seeing the pic for the first time. “The film works,” he said. “Until an illusionist first performs his effect for a live audience, you never really know.”

Producer Aaron Ryder said, “No one believed we shot 95% of the film” — a London-set period piece — “in California, which in itself is a magic trick.”
