Spain, ‘Scotland’ on display

Duo bow at Variety Screening Series

WHAT: Variety Screening Series unspools “Volver” (Sept. 18) and “The Last King of Scotland” (Sept. 20)

WHERE: ArcLight Cinemas, Hollywood

WHO: Helmer Pedro Almodovar, actress Penelope Cruz

ADDICTED: Almodovar said working with someone on multiple films is like an investment. “You know they understand you and you understand them, it’s a good advantage.” Cruz, on the other hand, describes it more as an addiction to Almodovar. “Once you’ve experienced (him) it’s like a drug … and then when you are not shooting with him you are making a movie thinking, ‘What is Pedro going to think?’ You are hooked forever.”

The Last King of Scotland

WHO: Director Kevin Macdonald, thesps James McAvoy and Kerry Washington

CONSCIOUS COLLABORATORS: Washington said, “It’s a testament to how conscious Kevin is about the idea of colonization, that we were not the West going in robbing and pillaging and using what we could from Uganda and then leaving with a great film. We went in as a team with the country, with the community, and all made a film together.”
