Thesps on path to hoops 'Glory'
WHAT: Buena Vista’s Thursday preem of “Glory Road”
WHO: Helmer James Gartner; producer Jerry Bruckheimer; thesps Josh Lucas, Emily Deschanel, Jon Voight and Derek Luke; plus a number of original 1966 Texas Western Miners (coach Don Haskins was not able to attend); and Alicia Keys, who croons on the soundtrack
WHERE: Hollywood’s Pantages Theater (screening), Hollywood Palladium (banquet-style after-bash)
STUDY BREAK: While preparing to play a living legend, Lucas felt a responsibility to fans to accurately portray Haskins. So how did Lucas master his coaching style? “We’d go out and drink tequila, sit in a white pickup truck, and he’d tell me stories,” Lucas said.
HOOP DREAMS: Thesp Mehcad Brooks, who admitted to “stalking the script,” had longtime sentiment for the team that made basketball history. This was “a bedtime story for me,” he said. “I knew the final score (of the championship-winning game) as a kid — it was like trivia.”
OLD SCHOOL: Luke, whose character Bobby Joe Hillcourts thesp Tatyana Ali‘s character, noted that aside from the big hair and Converse shoes, he also was fond of the era’s chivalry. “When you (took) a girl out, you would have to put on a suit — even for a soda,” he said.
