No more 'Princess Diaries' for Anne Hathaway. She's moved on to gay cowboys and devilish editrixes
For her first high-profile adult role in Focus Features’ “Brokeback Mountain,” Anne Hathaway sheds her G-rated image — not to mention her shirt in a brief love scene — to the surprise of some.
“Just because of the film choices I made early on, it doesn’t mean I’ve ever had any moral objection to playing roles of a more adult nature,” says the 23-year-old, who plays Jake Gyllenhaal’s wife in “Brokeback.” “People have acted like I’ve somehow desecrated the family-film genre by having once been associated with it and now moving on. I’ve just grown as an actress.”
And she’s not done yet. Hathaway has since traded the outrageous (though period-appropriate) acrylic nails and bleached-blond ‘dos of “Brokeback’s” archetypal Texas matriarch for the supremely chic threads of a New York fashion-magazine editor. She’s currently filming the lead opposite Meryl Streep in Fox’s big-screen adaptation of Lauren Weisberger’s novel “The Devil Wears Prada.”
On meeting Streep for the first time, Hathaway admitted to feeling like that awkward teen again, thanks to a bad case of nerves. But she came prepared — with a bottle of wine. “I handed her the wine and was, like, um, ‘I’m gonna need this,’ ” Hathaway recalls, “and then Meryl said, ‘Thank God, I think we all do.’ “
