Pic doesn’t miss a trick

Trio chat about magic of filmmaking

WHAT: The Variety screening of Christopher Nolan‘s “The Prestige” Oct. 16 at Hollywood’s ArcLight

WHO: Director Nolan was joined for a Q&A by stars Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale. Variety editor Timothy M. Gray moderated.

TOGETHER AGAIN: The film, which reunited Nolan with his “Batman Begins” star Bale, focuses on the rivalry between two magicians in early 20th-century London. Nolan admitted, “I almost didn’t ask Christian to do the part, because I figured he’d be sick of me.” Nolan also addressed the challenge of adapting Christopher Priest‘s novel: “A lot of what the book does in structural terms is quite literary, and wouldn’t work in a film.”

He added, “What a magician does is exactly like what a filmmaker does. They try to convince you of the reality of what you’re seeing, so you’ll be impressed, but you know there’s a trick behind it.”
