New Year’s ‘Peace’

Celebs share in 'Resolution'

What began as lunch-date conversation in mid-December grew into a “Resolution for Peace” on Santa Monica’s Third Street Promenade on New Year’s Eve.

“We were talking about our personal feelings of needing to do something to further the cause of peace in the world, something small and personal and not tied to any one event,” Lionsgate’s Tom Ortenberg said of his noontime exchange with thesp Maria Bello, filmmaker Paul Haggis and Daily Variety‘s Edie Riggins.

And so they created their own event and drew a crowd on the ocean-adjacent promenade, where candles were lit and personal resolutions were added to poster-sized peace petitions.

“It was a beautiful get-together of people putting their holiday plans on hold and turning out in bad weather to make their voices heard,” Ortenberg said.

Those with candles and pens in hand included Helen Hunt, Diane Lane, Camryn Manheim, Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman, Blair Underwood, Nia Vardalos and helmer Robert Greenwald.
