SURFER’S PARADISE, Queensland — The 9-year-old Inside Film Awards lost some of their wattage in the move to the shiny new Gold Coast Convention Centre, away from historic Luna Park in Sydney.
The abundantly-catered November 17 event hosted by Joel Edgerton was abuzz with local industryites, producer-types from the Screen Producers Conference which had wrapped that day, and a handful of starlets flown in from Sydney and Melbourne but it lacked the energy usually generated by its exuberant cavalry of up-and-comers and cool new kids on the block.
Last year expat Aussie Icon chief Bruce Davey was refused a ticket because organizers didn’t know who he was (and refused to listen). This year had he wanted to go he might have been invited to present an award.
Ray Winstone, Cathy Schulman and Phillip Noyce did the honors (presented awards), “Kenny” and “Ten Canoes” triumphed and some of the 1,300 guests partied past pumpkin hour.
