When it comes to engagement rings, some couples think like crack addicts — the bigger the rock, the better. “We get women who say they won’t get married for less than 2 carats,” says Jay Carlile of Beverly Hills jeweler

Martin Katz. In the U.S., a ring’s average diamond size is .38 carats. That’s a pebble by L.A. standards. (According to local jewelers, 1 carat is considered modest.)

So, how to hold your hand high if your bling isn’t blinding? “It comes down to how secure you are in a relationship,” says Carlile. “If your husband is a jerk, even a 10-carat ring isn’t big enough.”
