How to get past ‘no’

Helmer finally gets film to screen

WHAT: The L.A. preem of “Shadowboxer” July 19 at the ArcLight Theater.

HOLLYWOOD SAID NO: Director Lee Daniels said the film is being independently distributed because Hollywood turned him down. He spoke of his cast and how much money they worked for. “These people came into my world for some Tootsie Rolls and some barbecue potato chips,” he joked. “You all made my dream come true and I had nothing to pay you but love. I want to tell the kids that want to make a film, you can do it, you will do it and don’t take no for an answer.”

EMOTIONALLY RAW: Star Vanessa Ferlito said her role was emotionally challenging because her character changes and evolves over seven years. “It was very intense,” she said. “The experience was amazing and your job is easy when you love the people.”
