SYDNEY — The Australian Screen Directors’ Assn. didn’t get around to holding an awards dinner last year, so organizers ensured this year’s event at the Intl. College of Management in Manly April 6 unspooled in double time.
Org prexy Donald Crombie fell off the back of the stage between presenting awards, helmer Antony Szito shed a tear upon receiving special mention for his debut “DragonBlade,” Simon Carson accepted a directing award on behalf of his late father, Michael Carson, and producer David Elfick‘s speech for Lifetime achievement winner Phillip Noyce elicited hearty laughs from the 200 assembled.
“As a director, Phillip has made some great and important films; some very good films; some other films; and ‘Sliver.'”
