YOUTH ANGLE: During the post-screening Q&A, Field, also an actor, discussed the challenges and pitfalls of directing other thesps.
“I work with actors in a way that makes sense to me,” he said. “Each one has an angle you have to approach them from. You have to give them enough space to let them work. It’s like having children, in a way. You say you’ll never do that thing that your father used to, but you do it anyway.”
In “Little Children,” Field not only had the usual actor-director battles to contend with, but other issues that arise from working with children on a film.
“Because of their age, there were three directors on set just to work with the children. Kate (Winslet) and Patrick (Wilson) became their parents for 40% of their time.”
